Ask most business owners what their biggest outgoings are and the answer is usually some combination of two things: the funding they took out to grow the business, and the bills they pay every month. Both are sizeable and unavoidable.

Prospa attaches earning to both, so the spending you’re already doing works a little harder. This guide explains how each one works, what to weigh up before opting in, and how the two can work together.

Earning Qantas Points on your business funding

Through its partnership with Qantas Business Rewards, Prospa is the first direct Australian cash flow lender to offer Prospa Small Business Loan or Business Loan Plus, you can choose to earn 1 Qantas Point for every $1 funded, up to 500,000 Qantas Points per loan (fees apply).

On a $100,000 Prospa Small Business Loan, opting in earns you 100,000 Qantas Points. On a $200,000 loan, 200,000 Qantas Points. These are points you can put towards business flights for client meetings, accommodation when you’re interstate, or business travel for the team, all on the back of a funding decision you were already making.

If you’re already taking out the loan to invest in your business, choosing to earn Qantas Points means you get something back on the same decision. As Beau Bertoli, Prospa’s co-founder and chief revenue officer, said in Mortgage Professional Australia’s coverage of Prospa’s Qantas Points partnership:

“Small business owners work incredibly hard – they’re often the first to open, the last to leave. This partnership recognises that effort in a way that genuinely matters. By pairing funding with Qantas Points, we’re adding tangible benefits to everyday business progress.”

  • Qantas Points are calculated on the amount funded, that is, your loan amount less the origination fee, and credited to your Qantas Business Rewards Account around 30 days after settlement.
  • You must choose to add Qantas Points before your loan settles.
  • Choosing to earn Qantas Points with a Prospa Small Business Loan or Business Loan Plus incurs a 1% increase to the origination fee.
  • If you’re not already a Qantas Business Rewards member, Prospa registers you and waives the $89.50 (including GST) joining fee.
  • The tax treatment of business-earned points can vary depending on how they’re earned and redeemed, always check with your accountant.

Earning points on your everyday bill payments

With a Prospa Business Account you can earn Prospa Points on the bills you pay when you switch on Prospa Rewards, and there are two ways to do it: pay directly from the account, or bring a credit card you already own.

Bringing your own card lets you pay almost any business bill, including supplier invoices, rent, utilities and government payments, even where the biller doesn’t usually accept cards. You don’t need a Prospa-issued card. Any Australian-issued Visa, Mastercard or Amex credit or debit card works: you link the card, make the payment through Prospa, and Prospa gets it to the biller.

Switch on Prospa Rewards and eligible card payments earn 1 Prospa Point for every $1 you pay. A 1% + GST rewards fee applies per transaction while rewards are on, on top of Prospa’s servicing fee, and you can switch rewards off anytime.

As Tian Shou from Prospa’s Product Team explains, “The biggest barrier to earning points on business payments has always been because the majority of suppliers, government billers and landlords don’t accept cards. So we flipped it: you bring the card you already own, and we get the payment to the biller. If you can pay the bill at all, you can earn on it.”

Paying directly from the Business Account works the same way. When you switch on Prospa Rewards, eligible payments made via BPAY, bank transfer or a Prospa Visa Business Debit Card earn at the same rate.

Prospa Points convert to Qantas Points with Qantas Business Rewards at a rate of 2 Prospa Points to 1 Qantas Point, or redeem for gift cards from brands like JB Hi-Fi and Mitre 10.

Two points stand out for any business owner:

  • You don’t need a Prospa Small Business Loan to earn on payments. The Business Account, and the option to bring your own card with it, are available whether or not you’re borrowing.
  • If you pay with a rewards credit card you’ve linked to Prospa, you can earn your card’s own points and Prospa Points on the same payment.

Earning on both funding and payments

If you’re using both, the value compounds. As a Qantas Business Rewards member who’s opted in to earning Qantas Points, a project funded by a Prospa Small Business Loan earns Qantas Points on the funding. The supplier invoices for that same project, paid through Prospa with a card you already own, earn Prospa Points that can be converted to Qantas Points.

Not every business will use both, and the amounts depend on your loan size and how much you pay through Prospa. Funding and payments are two of your largest outgoings, and with Prospa both can earn rewards.

What is Qantas Business Rewards?

Qantas Business Rewards is the loyalty program made for Australian businesses. It lets your business earn Qantas Points on a range of business expenses and save on eligible Qantas flights, with points held in the Qantas Business Rewards Account rather than a Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Qantas Points earned through your business can be put towards flights, flight upgrades, accommodation, car hire and other business travel costs (taxes, fees and carrier charges apply on flight redemptions). You can also transfer points to a linked Qantas Frequent Flyer account, with a minimum transfer of 3,000 points.

For the full picture of how the program works, the membership levels and what you can redeem, see the Qantas Business Rewards website.
